Acai Blueberry Omega Blast: A morning smoothie packed with antioxidants

While there have been recent articles on the benefits of having a coffee before running, one of our favorite nutritional gurus, Latham Thomas, informs us that a pre-yoga coffee is not the best idea to calm both the mind and the digestive tract. But fear not – Latham's got a smoothie-licious alternative that’s sure to perk up your poses.

Here’s why you should try our go-to nutritional guru Latham Thomas’ Acai Blueberry Omega Blast before your next yoga class:

Rockin’ the antioxidants

Blueberries, the first ingredient, are an excellent source of antioxidants, those feisty molecules that play an important role in preventing cellular damage. (Added bonus: a regular yoga practice helps further boost antioxidants throughout your body, resulting in a stronger immune system and improved ability to recover from illnesses like the common cold or flu, according to Latham.)


Two berries are better than one

Latham also notes that putting acai berries and blueberries together is a power move. While the antioxidants in blueberries help you stay healthy on and off your yoga mat, the Omega fatty acids in acai make it a complete protein. In other words, it contains every amino acid your body can’t make on its own.

A blast of these berries will keep you energized all the way to savasana. Once you take your first sip, you’ll forget all about silly old Joe.

Here is the recipe for Latham Thomas’ Acai Blueberry Omega Blast:

  • 1 pkt Acai pulp (Sambazon)
  • 1 tsp Chia seeds 
  • 1/2 cup of blueberries (fresh or frozen)
  • 13/4cups water or apple juice
  • 1/2 banana peeled
  • Homemade granola for topping (optional)
Place all ingredients in a high-speed blender and process until smooth. The mixture will be creamy. Place in a cup and top with homemade granola and banana slices.

Sub for banana

When I'm out of bananas, I reach for a half of an avocado to add creaminess to my smoothie. Avocados are a great source of healthy fat, protein and fiber. If you need a little added sweetness with your banana substitution, throw in a date or two :)

Bananas not needed

bananas are always great in smoothies because they add a thicker consistency, and most people already have this on hand at home. You can simply omit or replace with any other fruit you like. If you are looking for a thicker consistency, try adding 2 TBSP soaked Cashews - this will add creaminess and an extra boost of protein and omega-6.

What do you suggest as a substitute for bananas? I'm allergic to them and most smoothie recipes include bananas.
